Both Josh and I had our reservations about venturing out into the wild just the two of us. It was real, raw Alaskan wilderness, the course of the little river we had in mind. He thought we should bring weapons in case of bears; I thought we might somehow lose the canoe halfway between the put-in outside of the Central crossroads and the bridge way out by the village of Circle on the Yukon River where we were supposed to wind up.

So we hemmed and hawed about it, but in the end, our adventurous spirit carried the day and we wound up embarking with neither rifle nor map.
