When I saw this week’s #writephoto prompt from Sue Vincent, I immediately thought of a poem I wrote long ago, of which I doubt if any copies remain.
So I decided to make an attempt to recreate the poem from memory, and that effort is the poem which follows.
Down Home Christmas
Black bird perched on colored lights
Strung from the courthouse
Outside the five and dime
There’s a man at the payphone wants to talk to God
He just can’t find the change
It’s a down home Christmas
The little church is white
The shadow of its cross
Gray on the gritty
