did you ever

read the recipe

on the side

of a Jiffy corn muffin mix box?

it says the griddle will be hot

when “a few drops of water

dance on the surface.”

how very lovely, what sheer poesy

is this?

one is left but to wonder

whether the water

is doing the foxtrot, the mashed potato,

the castanet- clinging fandango

or what

but like many of the best poets,

Jiffy corn muffin mix

likes to tell you what to do.

“PRESS HERE” it barks, and

“TEAR BACK” and

“prepare as directed”
