“Rage, rage against the dying of the light” –
When Dylan Thomas wrote these stirring words
His mind may have been on his own impending death,
But this immortal line of his re-echoes to me now as I consider
The current condition and future prospects of my country, the USA.

It seems to me that we are undergoing a rapid erosion
Not only of such essential institutions as education,
But also of our values and expectations.
Is what’s best for most still of paramount value?
Do we even expect, any more, to be told the truth by our leaders?

Nations are impermanent. They do rise and fall.
Does this erosion forebode ultimate collapse?
As our once-fresh ideals become stale lip-service,
Do we rage? Or merely whimper?
